Module 1: Audio Podcast Pre- Production

Reading & Writing

Connection is the word I’d use to describe this week’s reading, Podcast Taglines, Hooks, & the Power of Words, from The Podcast Host. What stood out to me was how a few simple words can help introduce a podcast and connect with its audience. (Click to read more)

One thing that really stuck with me from this reading is the importance of creating a tagline that is simple, clear, and memorable. The article explains how taglines help establish a podcast’s identity and give listeners an idea of what to expect. Before this reading, I didn’t really think about how much a short statement could contribute to the overall message of a podcast.

For my podcast, The Creative Hustle, I came up with the tagline, “The workday might have ended, but the creative work has just begun.” I chose this because it reflects my experience balancing my full-time teaching career with my photography business, Captured by Angg. Most days, finishing work at school doesn’t necessarily mean I’m done working. I still have photos to edit, clients to communicate with, and other responsibilities related to my business.

I wanted my tagline to be something that other creatives working full-time could relate to. It introduces the main idea of my podcast without giving away the entire story. Overall, this reading helped me understand that even something as simple as a tagline can play an important role in connecting with an audience.

Research to Inform

For this assignment, I wanted to explore podcasts that focus on creativity, entrepreneurship, and personal experiences. (Click to read more)

Podcast #1: The Terrible Creative

I chose thiI chose this podcast because it discusses topics like burnout, creative identity, and the pressures that come with pursuing creative work. I also like that it uses a solo storytelling format, which is similar to what I’m planning for my podcast. This gave me an example of how I could share my own experiences without needing an interview.

Podcast #2: Creative Pep Talk

I chose this podcast because it connects to the overall message of my project. I like how the podcast focuses on the creative process rather than just the final outcome. I want to discuss both the rewarding and challenging sides of running a photography business and this podcast is a good reference point.

Podcast #3: B&H Photography Podcast

II like that it explores different experiences and perspectives within the photography industry rather than only focusing on camera equipment. For The Creative Hustle, I want to share my own experiences as a photographer, including the challenges of managing a business while working full-time.

Create

For this week’s project, I began the pre production process for my podcast, The Creative Hustle. The podcast focuses on my experience balancing my full-time teaching career with running my photography business, Captured by Angg. I wanted to create something personal that other creatives who are balancing multiple responsibilities could relate to. (Click to read more)

I started by creating a mind map to organize my ideas, including my daily responsibilities, challenges, and the message I wanted listeners to take away. From there, I completed my pre-production planning document, which helped me outline the different sections of the podcast and identify where I could incorporate narration, background music, ambient audio, and sound effects. I also developed my tagline: “The workday might have ended, but the creative work has just begun.” Not too sure how I feel about it yet.

One challenge I had during this process was figuring out how much of the podcast I actually needed to script. At first, I was trying to write everything word for word, but I realized that using a combination of scripted lines and talking points would allow me to sound more natural when recording, so that’s what I did.

Moving forward, I’m looking forward to experimenting with different audio elements and seeing how they can help bring my story together.
